Situated in the London borough of Hillingdon near to the river Colne, which forms the border with the county of Buckinghamshire, lies the university town of Uxbridge.
The town is a major industrial and business centre, playing host to a large number of international corporations, from technology giants Xerox, Apple and Unisys, service and employment heavyweights PricewaterhouseCoopers and Manpower to food and drink companies such as The Coca-Cola Company and General Mills. The town centre is also home to a variety of high street retail names and, as such, is a popular place for shoppers hoping to avoid the busier shopping areas of the capital.
On the outskirts of Uxbridge is the local Royal Air Force base which was famously the headquarters of Fighter Command at the time of The Battle of Britain, the entrance of the airfield still displays a replica Spitfire in memory of this fact.
